Course Overview

This Emergency First Aid at Work course is designed for anyone required to act as an emergency first aider in the workplace. It provides the essential knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to recognise and respond to a range of workplace emergencies, enabling learners to provide safe and effective first aid.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people in Great Britain are injured at work. Having trained first aiders on site can make a significant difference, ensuring someone receives immediate care while waiting for the emergency services.

Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, employers are responsible for providing appropriate first aid arrangements in the workplace. This includes carrying out a first aid needs assessment, ensuring suitable first aid equipment is available, and providing enough trained first aiders to meet the needs of the organisation.

Enable learners to understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider in the workplace
Develop the ability to assess an emergency situation safely, including conducting a scene and primary survey
Build the skills and confidence needed to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty, including CPR and safe use of an AED
Ensure learners can recognise and manage a choking casualty
Develop competence in managing external bleeding, including life-threatening catastrophic bleeding
Build understanding of how to recognise and manage shock and minor injuries
Enable learners to conduct a secondary survey and manage suspected fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains
Develop the ability to recognise and manage suspected head, spinal, and chest injuries
Ensure learners can provide first aid for burns, scalds, eye injuries, and suspected poisoning
Build competence in recognising and responding to anaphylaxis, heart attack, stroke, epileptic seizure, asthma attack, and hypoglycaemic emergencies

Roles and responsibilities of a first aider, including infection control and consent
Conducting a scene survey and primary survey of a casualty
Summoning appropriate assistance in an emergency
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Recovery position and continual monitoring of breathing
Management of seizures
Recognition and management of choking
Management of external bleeding, including catastrophic bleeding, wound packing, and tourniquet use
Recognition and management of shock
Treatment of minor injuries, including cuts, grazes, bruises, splinters, and nosebleeds
Conducting a secondary survey and casualty history
Management of suspected fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains, including sling application
Recognition and management of suspected head and spinal injuries
Management of suspected chest injuries, including penetrating wounds
Management of burns and scalds involving heat, chemicals, and electricity
Management of eye injuries involving dust, chemicals, and embedded objects
Recognition and management of suspected poisoning

This course is aimed at individuals appointed to act as a first aider in their workplace under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, as well as those with a specific responsibility to provide first aid in voluntary and community activities.

Learners must be at least 14 years old on the first day of training and be able to perform practical tasks at floor level, with a minimum of Level 1 literacy and numeracy or equivalent strongly recommended.

Due to the practical nature of the course, learners should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, such as trousers and flat shoes.
