Course Overview

This is a qualification that tests both practical and knowledge-based skills in a realistic working environment. When you have successfully completed this qualification, you will be at an Improver/Electrician’s Mate level. This qualification is a starting-point for anyone looking to enter the electrical industry without an apprenticeship already lined up. This qualification gets trainees the foundational knowledge, but they will require the Level 3 (2365- 03) and an NVQ later to become a fully qualified “Gold Card” electrician.

  • Provide learners with the essential health and safety knowledge required to work safely within building services engineering
  • Develop learners’ understanding of the basic principles of electrical science
  • Build knowledge of electrical installations technology and the systems used across the industry
  • Develop the practical skills needed to install wiring systems and enclosures to current standards
  • Ensure learners understand how to communicate effectively with others within building services engineering
  • Provide learners with the competencies needed to work as an electrician’s mate under supervision
  • Prepare learners for progression onto Level 3 electrical installation qualifications

  • Health and safety in building services engineering

This course is designed for learners with no prior electrical experience or knowledge who want to enter the electrotechnical industry and work toward becoming a registered electrician. It’s particularly suited to those who want to get started in the industry but don’t currently have a job within the trade, and who can’t or don’t wish to follow the apprenticeship route.

City & Guilds sets no formal entry requirements for this qualification, though a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy is expected. Successful completion allows learners to progress into supervised employment as an electrician’s mate, or onto further City & Guilds qualifications such as the Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation.
