On successful completion of the qualification, it will allow them to be register with Energy & Utility Skills.

On successful completion of the course learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of health, safety and environmental regulations.
  • Understand the basic principles, and safety requirements, of the gas distribution system.
  • State how to control a fire on the network.
  • Demonstrate the safe use of breathing apparatus.
  • Explain how to locate and avoid damage to underground plant.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the PE pipe jointing process.
  • Demonstrate the safe use of tools and equipment associated with gas network operations.
  • Explain the basic principles of signing, lighting and guarding in the public highway.
  • Demonstrate how to safely assist in the excavation and reinstatement process.

The City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Network Construction Operations (Gas) provides learners with the foundational knowledge, skills, and safety awareness required to operate as an assistant on the UK gas distribution network.

The course develops an understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation, ensuring learners recognise their legal responsibilities and the importance of safe working practices when operating in high-risk gas environments. It introduces the basic principles of the gas distribution system, including network components, operational hazards, and the controls required to work safely around live gas infrastructure.

Learners are guided through essential safety procedures, including fire control on the network, the safe use of breathing apparatus, and the correct selection and use of tools and equipment associated with gas operations. The course also covers locating and avoiding underground plant to prevent service strikes, alongside the principles of signing, lighting, and guarding when working in the public highway.

Practical competence is developed through structured theory sessions, trainer-led demonstrations, and workplace-based evidence collection. Learners gain an understanding of polyethylene (PE) pipe jointing processes and are trained to safely assist with excavation, reinstatement, and other core site activities under supervision.

Assessment is achieved through written and practical evaluations, supported by the completion of a portfolio of evidence demonstrating competence in the workplace. On successful completion, learners achieve City & Guilds Level 1 certification and are eligible to register with Energy & Utility Skills (EUSR), with registration requiring renewal every five years in line with industry standards.

All learners that are required to be an operative to assist with the installing, maintaining or replacement of the UK gas networks. Learners should already hold a valid SHEA passport. Learners must also have the opportunity to gain experience on the network that will allow them to build a portfolio.
