The City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) Service Layer provides learners with the knowledge, skills, and competence required to install, maintain, replace, and decommission gas service installations on the UK gas distribution network.
The course develops a strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation, alongside the safe systems of work required when operating in the highway and in proximity to live gas assets. Learners explore safe digging techniques, traffic and site safety considerations, and the controls necessary to manage risks associated with gas service installation activities.
Learners are guided through the technical principles and practical skills required to undertake low-pressure (LP) and medium-pressure (MP) service connections to live mains. This includes mechanical and fusion jointing techniques, the installation of service valves, and the application of flow-stopping techniques specific to gas services, all carried out in accordance with network operator procedures and industry standards.
The course also develops competence in laying, testing, and commissioning LP and MP gas services, as well as the safe decommissioning of existing services. Assessment is achieved through a combination of centre-based theory and practical assessments, on-site assessment, and the completion of a portfolio of evidence demonstrating workplace competence.
On successful completion, learners achieve City & Guilds Level 2 certification and are eligible to register with Energy & Utility Skills (EUSR) as a qualified NCO Level 2 (Gas) Service Layer operative.
Registration is subject to renewal every five years, in line with industry requirements.
All operatives that are required to be a team leader for the installing, maintaining or replacement of gas service installations on the UK gas networks.
