Course Overview

This course will provide the learners with the skills and knowledge to demonstrate their competence against the requirements for the City & Guilds Level 2 in Network Construction Operations (Gas) Main Layer. On successful completion of the qualification, it will allow them to be register with Energy & Utility Skills.

On successful completion of the course learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of health, safety and environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrate the skills to work safely in the highway and use safe digging techniques.
  • Demonstrate the skills required to undertake LP and MP mains connections.w
  • Demonstrate the jointing of pipes using mechanical and fusion techniques.
  • Understand the principle required to fit and test a branch connection to a PE or metallic main carrying gas.
  • Demonstrate flow stopping techniques for PE and Metallic mains.
  • Demonstrate the competencies required to lay, test and commission LP and MP mains.
  • Demonstrate the competencies required to decommission mains.
  • State the principles of installing trench support systems.

The City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Gas) – Main Layer provides learners with the knowledge, skills, and competence required to undertake the installation, maintenance, replacement, and decommissioning of gas mains on the UK gas distribution network.

The course focuses on developing a detailed understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation, alongside safe working practices specific to gas network operations. Learners explore working safely in the highway, applying safe digging techniques, and implementing appropriate controls when operating in high-risk environments where live services are present.

Learners are guided through the technical principles and practical skills required to install, test, and commission low-pressure (LP) and medium-pressure (MP) gas mains. This includes undertaking mains connections, fitting and testing branch connections to polyethylene (PE) and metallic mains, and applying mechanical and fusion jointing techniques in accordance with industry standards and network operator procedures.

The course also develops competence in flow stopping techniques for both PE and metallic mains, as well as the safe decommissioning of existing mains. Learners gain an understanding of trench support systems and the principles of their correct selection and installation to ensure excavation stability and compliance with safety requirements.

Assessment is carried out through a combination of centre-based theory and practical assessments, on-site assessments, and the completion of a portfolio of evidence. On successful completion, learners meet the requirements for City & Guilds certification and are eligible to register with Energy & Utility Skills (EUSR) as a qualified NCO Level 2 (Gas) Main Layer, with registration requiring renewal every five years.

All operatives that are required to be a team leader for the installing, maintaining or replacement of gas main infrastructure on the UK gas networks. Learners should already hold a valid SHEA passport and be registered as an existing NCO 1 (G) operative. Learners must also have the opportunity to gain experience on the network that will allow them to build a portfolio.

City and Guilds certification.
