Course Overview

This course will provide the learners with the skills and knowledge required to understand their legal duties, the potential hazards, and risks of working in confined spaces, as well as the recommended safe practices according to the Confined Spaces Regulations.

On successful completion of the course learners will be able to:

  • Explain the term confined space.
  • Identify typical types of confined spaces.
  • Identify risks associated with confined spaces.
  • Explain the risk assessment process used to promote safe working practices.
  • Identify the appropriate PPE.
  • Describe a safe system of work.
  • Identify a safe system of work to facilitate an emergency rescue.
  • Audit documentation relevant to confined spaces.

The Confined Spaces course provides learners with a comprehensive understanding of the legal duties, hazards, and control measures associated with working in confined spaces, in accordance with the Confined Spaces Regulations and current UK industry guidance.

The course explores what constitutes a confined space and examines common types encountered across construction, utilities, and industrial environments. Learners develop an understanding of the risks associated with confined spaces, including hazardous atmospheres, restricted access and egress, engulfment, and the potential for fire, explosion, or asphyxiation.

Learners are guided through the principles of safe systems of work, including the confined spaces risk assessment process, identification of appropriate control measures, and selection of suitable personal protective equipment (PPE). Emphasis is placed on planning work activities correctly, ensuring adequate supervision, and maintaining clear communication to prevent incidents and comply with legal requirements.

The course also develops awareness of emergency arrangements, including the identification of safe systems of work to facilitate emergency rescue. Learners gain the ability to review and audit confined space documentation to ensure it remains suitable, sufficient, and compliant with organisational procedures and regulatory expectations.

Training combines structured theory sessions with trainer-led demonstrations and practical exercises, supported by written and practical assessments where appropriate. On completion, learners are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to work safely in confined spaces and to support compliant operations within their organisation.

This course is designed for managers, supervisors and operatives who are required to work in, or enter, confined spaces.
